Those who have been following us for a long time already know: we love to discover the gastronomy of the country we visited, it seems to us a part of the culture so important that it is impossible not to explore it. So in Ljubljana we decided to participate in a food tour, a gastronomic route of about 3 hours that led us to discover 6 restaurants in the city and try a few typical Slovenian dishes. Our Cicerona was Eva, a Slovenian sea of maja and passionate about good (and healthy) eating that told us a lot of stories about Slovenia and its food. Here we leave you our itinerary, the dishes we have tried and in short, we tell you our experience 🙂

STOP I: SQUARES AND SARDINES

Slovenia, in case you did not know, has a small strip of coastline, 46km that provide the country with fresh fish and seafood, although it is true that until the last century in most of Slovenia did not eat any of that. The reason is simple: it was not so easily reached its near but at the same time distant coast. Today the problem is no longer a problem and every day you can find delicious fresh fish in Ljubljana ready for the stomachs of your own and others to delight. It was our case: at the first stop of the food tour in Ljubljana we tried a plate of grilled squid and fried sardines, accompanied by the Trieste sauce, that's what they call it here, and which consists of parsley + garlic + olive oil. To drink we drink a good Malvasia wine (a very typical light white from Slovenia).

  • Where? Ribca restaurant, at the edge of the river, very close to the tourist information office.

STOP II: CARNIOLAN SAUSAGE

After trying the fish from the coast, it was time to know one of the greatest passions of Slovenes: meat. We went to one of the most famous restaurants in the city to try what is said to be the best pork sausage in all of Slovenia (Emperor Francisco Ferdinando dared to say that from all over the world!). As a curiosity to tell you that there was an American astronaut with Slovenian origins who took one of these sausages on his space mission ... come on, we can say that we ate a galactic sausage! They were served with mustard sauce and horseradish sauce. The procedure to prepare these sausages is long and laborious but the result is incredibly good! To drink we tried a rosé wine, the Cviček, delicate and very little alcoholic.

  • Where? Klobasarna, in Ciril-Metodov trg 15.

STOP III: KARST PROSCIUTTO

The third stop gave us a skewer of Slovenian ham and a glass of Teran, a very very very good couple! This ham is prepared with Slovenian sea salt and allowed to dry in the 'bora' wind, a wind so strong that it can reach 180km / h. Do not be surprised that in your visit to Slovenia you see pigeons, clouds and flying hams! The Teran wine, which is produced in the Carso area (Karst), is a red wine, quite strong and very rich in iron: for this reason in the past tooooo Slovenian tried to drink -at least- a glass of this wine at day.

  • Where? Vinoteka Movia, in Mestni trg 4.

STOP IV: ZLIKROFI + DUMPLING

Zlikrofi are a kind of small ravioli stuffed with mashed potatoes and presented in lamb sauce called bakalca. We tried them accompanied by a tasty apple juice (did you know that in Slovenia there are more than 40 types of apples? Flipas!).

Here we also try Slovenian dumplings, nothing to do with Asians ... I think it has been the rarest dish we ate: they are prepared with cottage cheese and served with a lot of sugar. No doubt a curious dish, which we loved to try because I think that without this food tour we would never have discovered it.

  • Where? Gostilna Podlipo, in Borštnikov trg.

STOP V: TRUCK

The next stop (yes, I know we are gluttons!) Led us to try another fish from Slovenia, this time a trout from Lake Bled! It was very tasty, they also served it with a roasted potato with butter and parsley ... great 🙂 Our stomach was wondering if Christmas had arrived when Eva, our guide, told us that the last stop was missing ... and what a stop!

  • Where? Romansa 1971, in Trg republike 1.

STOP VI: PREKMURSKA GIBANICA

The prekmurska gibanica was the great discovery of this food tour in Ljublana: this cake drove us crazy: it's delicious! Mind you, get ready for a good time after having eaten it because my mother ... has to have 1 million 750 calories, anyway ... everything has a price! Among its ingredients we find cheese, poppy seeds, nuts, apple and cinnamon. We tested it in the Skyscrapers, the tallest building in Ljubljana (and the former Yugoslavia). From its terraces are the best views of the city, so spend the € 8 of the castle tower and come here: for € 3.5 you have a view and delicious cake.

Where? Neboticnik, in Štefanova 1.
