Ohhh, it's been a long time (even years) since we wanted to write this article, but between one thing and another we never found the moment. There, today does not happen. Yes You want to organize a trip to Prague, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest here we leave you all the useful information what do you need and a few tips not to screw it up.

We write 4 articles with the main things to see and do in each of these cities. You can read them by clicking on the following links:

  • 30 things to do in Prague
  • 35 things to do in Budapest
  • 25 things to do in Vienna
  • 15 things to do in Bratislava

We believe that it is best to arrive from Spain to Prague (or Budapest) and leave from Budapest (or Prague). That is, the ideal route would:

  1. Flight from Spain to Prague *
  2. Prague → Vienna (350 km). 4 hours by train (€ 22) / 5 hours by bus (€ 15)
  3. Vienna → Bratislava (80 km). 1 hour by train (€ 14) / 1 hour by bus (€ 6)
  4. Bratislava → Budapest (210 km). 5 hours by bus (€ 10)
  5. Flight back to Spain from Budapest**

We discard the idea of taking flights between destinations. On the contrary we advise to make the route between the cities by train (it's a great area to take advantage of the Interrail pass) or by bus (If you want to save some euros, there are always offers on Flixbus).

There is also the option of make a roadtrip, renting a car with pick up in Prague and delivery in Budapest (or vice versa). The price is usually around € 100-140 for 7 days of rent, to which we must add the one-way return rate at a different office (about € 300).

There is one last option, more romantic but more expensive: the River cruise on the Danube. Between the cities of Vienna and Budapest there are countless cruise options for several days. In this case Prague would be out of the route (the Danube does not pass through here), but you will always have the option to include it after visiting Vienna, or for another trip 😉

Of course, cruises are not cheap. But they are a great opportunity to make the trip even more special.

Assuming you have one week of time, we would distribute the days like this:

  1. Prague (2)
  2. Vienna (2)
  3. Bratislava (1)
  4. Budapest (2)

Of course, we personally believe that it is a fair amount of time, especially to get to know Prague and Budapest (and even more so if we consider the time lost in transfers). Our advice is to dedicate a total of10 days and spread the time like this:

  1. Prague (3)
  2. Vienna (2)
  3. Bratislava (1)
  4. Budapest (4)

Considering that all cities tend to be quite cold, we would focus on spring and summer. Although we went in October and we had no problems, beyond wearing a rather fat jacket.

However, if you are a fan of Christmas atmosphere, keep in mind that in winter these cities are filled with street markets and lights. It has to be a magical time. And now yes, don't forget a good coat 😉

It is not a secret that, on this route, Bratislava plays the role of ugly duckling. And while it is not a city that drives visitors crazy because of its beauty, well, we believe it is worth spending at least one day. Nor is it crazy to visit her on a day trip from Vienna. However, we always prefer to see cities during the day and night.

Only in Vienna (Austria) and Bratislava (Slovakia) the current currency is the euro. In Prague (Czech Republic), the Czech Crown (CZK) is used and in Budapest (Hungary) the Hungarian Forint (HUF).

We always recommend using a card when traveling. Both for payments and to get money. It is not very cool to carry large amounts of cash on top, let alone having to change it in destinations whose currency is not €. But watch out for commissions! The solution we have found has been the Bnext card, which we complement with the N26 card. We have a total of 4 (two each), plus some of our traditional bank. These cards are free and allow you to get rid of the happy commissions.
